What is scalp micropigmentation?

This procedure creates a tiny dot by depositing pigments into the scalp, mimicking a closely shaven hair follicle. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) uses a specialized tool and pigments that are skin friendly. This non-surgical method provides a non-invasive, low maintenance and effective solution for bald or thinning scalps. SMP does not treat the cause of hair loss but just like any other permanent treatments, it creates an illusion of thicker, fuller and healthier scalp by using a camouflaging method.

- Yes and no, scalp micropigmentation and hair transplantation represent distinct approaches to combating hair loss. Both methods offer effective solutions for suitable candidates. Hair transplantation involves a surgical process in which hair follicles are extracted from donor areas and transplanted to areas of thinning or baldness on the scalp. Due to its surgical nature, it requires a longer procedure and recovery time for the results to show. On the other hand, SMP is a non-surgical procedure, making it less invasive and providing immediate results that typically last between 5 to 7 years.

- Scalp micropigmentation is the least painful procedure compare to any other hair treatment. The artist will apply a topical numbing to numb the area, some client does not even need for numbing as the pain is minimal to no pain at all.
- Scalp micropigmentation does not hinder the hair growth instead, it helps in better blood circulation resulting in better hair growth.
- Wash your hair properly prior to your appointment as for next 4 days hair wash is prohibited.
- Avoid oiling and any topical gel or cream on the scalp.
- Avoid heavy exercises on the day of the procedure.
- One should not wash their hair for 4 days after the procedure.
- No swimming or sauna for next 10 days.
- Avoid sun exposure, wearing a hat or cap is recommended.
- Apply the recommended gel as per your technicians advise.
- Scalp micropigmentation can last anywhere between 2 to 5 years depending on the client’s scalp and maintenance. However, to maintain the vibrancy of color and visibility of hair follicles, a touch-up session will be required.
- There are no side effects of SMP. However, one should do a thorough research about the artist and their clinic or studio profile before undergoing the procedure. This helps in preventing risk of botch work and subpar result. Additionally, if you have any medical concerns, then it should be discussed to counter any underlying risk after the procedure.
